Over 5000 cyclist turn up for Lance Armstrong Adelaide Twitter Ride
It estimated over 5000 bike riders turned up to ride with Lance Armstrong, while in Adelaide for the Santos Tour Down Under. This shows the power of using Twitter.
Lance posted 3 tweets, inviting anyone who wanted go for a social twitter ride to come along, Wrigley Park at Glenelg at 9:00am Saturday 16/01/10.

Lance Armstrong has been creating interest in his Livestrong Foundation for Cancer by promoting social rides with the community before major bike tours, on twitter.

Lance put out the challenge to see if Adelaide could beat the Dublin Ride
“Having dinner at my favorite spot here in Adelaide. I feel a Twitter ride coming on. Can Adelaide top Dublin??”
His next tweet he gives the location and the time
“Ok Adelaide . . . 9am Saturday. Wigley Reserve. Come one come all!”
And then he clarifies what to bring
“For those wondering about saturday wigley reserve ride, ride whatever kind of bike you want. Road, mtb, city, borrowed, old, new, whatever,”
Robbie McEwen also mentions the Twitter ride
Lance Armstrong turns up to Wigley Reserve with fellow tour riders Robbie McEwen and George Hincape for practise ride. Lance is swamped by 5000 bike rider who want to be able to claim they’ve ridden with Lance Armstrong winner of 7 Tour de France.
Cyclist turned up of all ages, some with their slick racing bikes, others looked like they drag the old Malvern Star from the Shed, and some came on unicycles and even a Penny Farthing.
Lance takes his the time to meet his fans and sign some autographs.
Even the premier Mike Rann turned up. The Premier didn’t escape Lance attention.
“Hey, where’s your bike? – look at all these voters!” Armstrong told the premier.
The practise ride was from Glenelg and ride north up the coast to Semaphore and back about 31Kms
The social peloton stretched for kilometres, with short notice the police had to use officers on motorbikes to create rolling stoppages along the way, closing streets so the procession could get through safely.

Lance said “it was busy, chaotic – but it was a controlled chaos,”
Lance was quoted as saying the following
“The field stretched for kilometres and kilometres … it’s almost like the bunch that we normally ride in,
although a little hairier,” Armstrong said.
“This was unique, because I’ve never done one where you turn back and you see how many people – there
were streams of people.
“Most (of them) tried to do a u-turn and come back with us.”
The twitter ride consider a great success and Fun
“It’s certainly the biggest one I’ve been a part of, we gave them a little
more notice than is typical.
“We had a lot of support from the local community and police, which
was really helpful, everyone was very mindful and respectful.
“There were a few crashes that I could hear, but it was great.” Lance Armstrong

To top it off, Adelaide managed to get more riders along than Dublin. So Lance was able to get more exposure for Livestrong.
This ride was picked all over the world and showed on the news.

Now I know not everybody has the exposure of Lance Armstrong, but your business can still use twitter and marketing by Social Media to promote yourself.
Social media is about being part of the community and contributing to it.
