TV advertising and billboards just got cheaper

I was watching Boston Legal, when I noticed everytime they went to ad break, they would have show 2 community ads and a paying ad. This happened all night.

I began wondering if just this show and the time spot.

So I decided to run some tests.

I set up the video recorder to record certain programs on different channels.

This what I found.

It didn’t seem to matter, what the show or time, there were considerably more community ads being placed, than paid ads. In most cases community ads are free as there donated for good causes. Like Canteen

The TV stations give these away for 2 reasons:
1. Its there way of giving back to the community, by bring to our attention a cause needing support.
2. They other reason they gives away these ads, because they act as fillers, when thy don’t have any advertisers.

So don’t be surprised seeing more and more Community ads because the TV stations are having a hard selling their TV Spots.

So Why are the TV Stuggling to get Advertisers.

People are watching less TV.
Could it be there just sick of watch Reality TV Shows, Cops solving crimes Shows, with latest forensic science. Boring Same old claptrap.

Why would you want to advertise your products on these mindless shows and pathetic scripts.

Its just one big yawn.

You see the serious marketers, understand that 18 -34 years have abandoned TV. They’ve gone. You’ll more likely find them hanging out on Facebook, MySpace or watching videos on YouTube.

On Youtube: You’ll find 75 million videos, with 150,000 new videos being daily. That’s bigger than any TV Network.

18-34 years Audience spends 4.3 times on Social media than they do on TV, radio and newspapers combined.

In 2008 advertisers spent $4.3 billion on Youtube.

This money was taken from the TV stations and 9% of TV revenue moved to where the crowd hangs out. Video.

This expected to double next year. Forrester Research believe, within the next 5 – 10 years the advertising spend will be closer to 60% of the pie.

Don’t thinks its only TV stations with advertisers leaving in droves and taking there advertising dollars with them . I was in LA in Januray and i was surprised to see half of the billboards empty.

A friend of mine, whose a media buyer, confirmed the old school media players are starving.
He told me most of the ads place on billboards were not being renewed.

So what does this mean to you as a small business owner.

Option 1 Riskier and more Expensive
If you have a product or service, which would be suitable to advertise on TV, then you could buy your ads dirt cheap. (Warning don’t use this method, to just get your name out there, your just flushing money down the toilet.) This is a great way to grab the advantage over your clueless competitors.

Maybe there a prominent billboard near you, where you can plaster your latest sales promotion. However I consider most Billboards advertising to have little impact, of creating sales. My Media buyer friend told me, that if get a your desired billboard, you have a fairly good chance of paying for a month and getting 3 months. If they don’t have other people to take your place, they’ll leave your ads, because empty Billboards are harder to fill.

Both of these could provide exposure to your products, if used wisely. Make sure they fit into your marketing Game Plan.

Option 2 Use marketing by Social Media
Social Media Sites are growing 10 times speed of any other internet sites.

Social media will be $3.1 billion industry by 2014 (Forrester)

It more than just, Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and YouTube. It’s made of thousands of sites, giving a voice and place for people, to hang and share ideas and common passions.

Get a handle, on any one of these and you’ve got a pretty good tool, but when you partner them, together that’s when the magic happens. Link these sites together with right tools and they become a powerful force. Even the big companies, with bags of money will struggle to compete with you. Because they’re so tied up in their corporate brand, they don’t have the time or patience to build relationship with people.
