Build Better User Experience With C.R.A.P. Design Principles

Good contrast Bad Contrast

You know a good (or a bad) design when you see one.

The definition of contrast as given by Google says, “it is the state of being strikingly different from something else in juxtaposition or close association.”

To do that, you might need an understanding of CRAP. CRAP, a design principle given by Robin Patricia Williams, stands for Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, and Proximity.

My Take

Love the name. CRAP very funny when you are talking about web design because there certainly is a lot of crap out there. This formula has plenty of merit, so it worth paying attention to when you building a website.

A good place to start before you design anything. What’s the purpose of your website...

6 Surprising Content Marketing Trends That Are Skyrocketing In 2016, And What You Need To Do In Response

It’s no big secret that content marketing is changing right now.

I don’t mean “changing” in the little tweaky sort of way. I mean big, massive sea changes.

The tricky thing is, we aren’t very good at predicting the future. Even though we see and feel these changes, we aren’t quite sure what to do in response.

To help cut through the confusion, I’ve assembled my list of predictions, hunches, educated guesses, and flat-out facts about the future of content marketing.

To help cut through the confusion, I’ve assembled my list of predictions, hunches, educated guesses, and flat-out facts about the future of content marketing.

My Take

A fortune is being spent on creating content. Does it work – it depend’s who you talk to and whether they have a vested interest. If you write good content which helps people solve a problem then it has a better chance of getting eyeballs. if you’re just writing boring tired stuff so you can show the search engines you adding fresh content, maybe it time stop and rethink this strategy.

Ask yourself “Why are you creating all this content? What’s the purpose?”

Don’t get sucked into the Free Traffic Syndrome. Website traffic is not free, there’s always a cost, where it’s time or money.

Trump: the Real Time Marketing Master that the Pundits Dismissed

I first wrote about Donald Trump’s mastery of real-time communications back in early August 2015 with my post Donald Trump Winning the Social Networking Primaries in a Landslide.

This was way before anybody set foot in a polling booth. In my post, I shared detailed analysis on how Trump was way ahead of the other candidates in his use of real-time social media.

My Take

Donald Trump is certainly getting a lot of media attention. It does not seem to matter what he says, his targetted audience seems to lapping up. Having a polar view makes you stand out, being beige & bland you get lost. You need to stand for something.

We will have to wait & see if these  tactics will get him to the White House or they more interested to see if this becomes a train wreck.

I bet the comedians are wetting their lips as the Trump Train rolls in. The gift that keeps giving.

How to Use Keyword Insights to Win Audience Attention

More people begin their purchase journeys online than ever before. Because of this, the digital space is crowded, challenging brands to engage consumers online. Consumers need relevant information, and brands need to win clicks and attention.

The secret to both a positive customer experience and positive impact on ROI is understanding what’s top of mind to your target audience.

In order to uncover this information, it’s crucial to monitor consumer keyword searches and understand how to effectively report on this information.

My Take

I often get asked by my clients, if help them get found in the Search Engines for certain phrases. Usually, these are not the money keywords.

Here’s an example a flooring company wanted to rank for “engineered flooring” when I did some research the was on heaps of sites but hardly had any traffic at all. So I asked him what this was, ‘he said oh that what we in the industry call Laminated Flooring’. Engineering flooring  is industry term Laminated Flooring is the  buyers phrase people renovating use when they are looking for timber look-a-like flooring. I guess you won’t be surprised this searched a lot more, but what’s even better, most of the suppliers call it engineered flooring, so Laminated Flooring has a huge upside…

What can I say about Rowan Shead?

What can I say about Rowan Shead?

Not much, thanks….

Just kidding.

Back in 2008 my wife and I had just commenced our own suburban Real Estate Agency.

Three months later the wheels fell off the economy as the Masters of The Universe came up empty after losing at the Casino of Greed.

The outlook for us was a little bleak.  Home prices went into freefall, buyers ran for the hills.

However, I could see through the doom and gloom that a new age was about to dawn and I knew that if I could jump in and embrace the ride on the developing tsunami, things would be ok.

I welcomed myself to the new ‘Save and Seek Value’ Economy – The exploding world of online business and commerce.

“Where do I start?” I wondered

I’d heard of blogs, I thought that websites were just Yellow Pages ads on steroids, social media platforms were only for telling people what you had for breakfast and dinner and landing pages were things you caught flies with.

I knew that we had to become more engaging on our own website and I asked one of the techs at the digital group who built the site for a link or tab to a blog I wanted to write.  He said that I would need to outsource it and he recommended this guy he knew – Rowan Shead.

I got straight onto Rowan and by asking him a couple of what I thought were straight forward questions he then opened up a whole new world for me.

We seemed to talk for hours and each time I thought my head would explode with the knowledge he was sharing with me at the pace of a locked on AK47.

Before I knew it, we were setting up landing pages, branding myself, publishing blogs, posting on social media and business really picked up.

For a bloke who was 44 or 45 at the time, this was like undertaking a mature age Uni course, but with almost immediate and quantifiable results.

I learned so much from Rowan at the time and I am still working with him.

Since those early baby steps, I have built and successfully launched my own online real estate agency, appeared on TV and Radio, written and published scores of blogs and posts, love writing persuasive content and copy for other businesses, conduct webinars, produce short videos, and continue to expand my digital presence to assist my clients.

Without Rowan, none of this would ever have happened.

He is a master of the digital marketing space and someone I would recommend you speak to if you want to move your business to the next level.

Why Mobile First is No Longer Enough; It’s Time To Think About Mobile Only Design

Zombie Apocalyse

For the last few years, “mobile first!” has become the mantra among savvy digital marketers. But a mobile first approach seems to be more of an ideology than it is a standard in digital design. Recent research shows that marketers still invest in mobile as an afterthought or as a bolt on to more mainstream digital programs. For some reason, executives still need more convincing to properly fund and support mobile initiatives that span the entire customer journey not just pieces of it.

While mobile is often referred to as the second screen, the reality is that smartphones are really the first screen among connected consumers. It’s always within reach. And, it is the first place consumers go to communicate, research, and share. As of last year, mobile platforms accounted for 60% of total digital media time spent according to ComScore…

My Take

If your site not mobile responsive then people are not going read your content, because your site will get penalised by Google.

On April 21st, Google rolled out it’s latest algorithm which will punish sites which aren’t Mobile Responsive – a fancy way of saying Mobile Friendly

“Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results. Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices”

http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com.au/2015/02/finding-more-mobile-friendly-search.html

Here’s why:

  • ½ of all local searches are done on mobile devices Source Cisco 2011
  • By 2013 more people will use their mobile phones than PC’s to get online… Source Gartner

  • Web traffic from mobile devices increased 110% in USA over the past year and 148% globallySource Quantcast

  •  According to Google, 95% of Smartphones users have searched for mobile information and 61% of users call a business after Searching while 59% visit the location

  •  9 out of 10 mobile searches lead to action. More than half lead to sales…Source: SearchEngineLand

Do you know how your website stacks up with Google mobile-friendliness algorithm?…

Here’s How to Turn First-Time Customers into Loyal Fans with Context-Rich Content

Click on “+Remarketing List” and select “customer emails” from the drop-down menu

When a customer comes through your door or makes a purchase online, they automatically become a person you could have a conversation with, be it at your store, office, expo, blog or via e-commerce. Simultaneously, you can collect their information and start building a database.

How can you translate this familiar feeling with your customers? In order to convert one-time customers to repeat customers, you have to add context to your conversation with them.

Wouldn’t it be great to have an ongoing context-rich conversation with your customers? One that can engage them, simply because it is relevant to them on an ongoing basis, even after they have made a purchase. It’s like continuing a conversation with a friend right after you’ve been gone for a few days…

My Take

Your Marketing needs to have multiple messages & touchpoints because on average only 2% of visitors to your site will buy on their 1st visit.

We are emotional beings, we buy on feelings, a gut decision, but we rationalise the decision with Logic.Winning the logical argument frees us up to be moved Emotionally. You have to make Both Cases so this why you need a Marketing Funnel

Disney is making a big, awesome change to its $1 billion ‘Disney Infinity’ video game business

Disney is making a big, awesome change to its $1 billion 'Disney Infinity' video game business

Every summer since 2013, Disney has released a brand-new version of “Disney Infinity,” its $1 billion-plus video game business that features plastic Disney action figures that can turn into characters on the screen.

Instead of releasing a new version of “Disney Infinity” this year, Disney is committing to supporting the current “Disney Infinity 3.0” version with new levels and new characters, at least through the end of 2016.

My Take

You can learn a lot from Disney the masters at leveraging their brand. Every new movie release becomes another money making franchise which  just keeps pumping out money..

7 Warning Signs Your Free WordPress Theme is Sabotaging Your Blog

Oh sure, installing a new free theme makes you feel better… for a little while. But pretty soon the itch to change it sets in again. Whether the design isn’t quite as sexy as other blogs, your blog looks too similar to others, or you have to deal with an annoying lack of functionality, these are all symptoms of using a free theme and reasons you might feel compelled to switch to another one.

You probably thought you were quite shrewd when you spotted that complimentary theme. Smarter to save your money for something else you might need, rather than waste it on something as inconsequential as a theme that you could get for nothing, right?…

My Take

Most free WordPress themes have  embedded links pointing back to the creator, so it good for them, as they have all these websites linking to their site.

We only build WordPress sites for our clients using Genesis Framework which has clean, optimized code + smart design architecture is important for achieving the best rankings possible.

Genesis’ turnkey designs give you an array of beautiful frames for your content built on HTML5.How does HTML5 enhance your site? First, it’s the new code standard, which will make your site compatible with future changes to the web. Secondly, it will ensure cross-browser compatibility. Break Through Writer’s Block With the “Kindergarten Trick”

Ideas for overcoming writers block

If you can’t seem to get the words flowing, this trick will make beating your writer’s block as easy as filling in the blanks. Sometimes you just have to go back to the basics. Way back.

We never struggled with writer’s block to answer those questions, right? The reason is that the topic was already defined, and all we needed to do was insert an answer! …the easiest way to overcome writer’s block is to make your work “fill in the blanks.” How? Through detailed outlining. And the more detail you put into your outline, the easier it will be to finally write.

My Take

We all have times when we find it difficult to write and that’s Ok. Just be aware of.I like to do the research then let it soak in & ferment in mind.

The next morning I just start writing. Let it flow & just keep going. Don’t stop to edit or fix spelling mistakes because now you’re switching from the creative brain to the process brain.

Google buys Motorola

I just finished reading “In The Plex: How Google Thinks, Works, and Shapes Our Lives” on my kindle.

In Chapter  5 Steven  Levy goes into great detail, on how Google became involved with mobile phones. The Chapter  is titled, Outside the Box: The Google  Phone Company and the Google TV Company. This becomes a priority for Google cofounders Larry Page and Sergey Brin because they realise, Mobile devises  are the   new gateway to the internet, and Google search needs to be there.

Google’s involvement with the Android Phone puts them on a collision course with Apple’s iPhone.

Today the battle of the Smart Phone, has just intensified  with Google Putting an offer $40 a share for Motorola

Here’s the other important part of the PR (the why, and what happens to Android now):

The acquisition of Motorola Mobility, a dedicated Android partner, will enable Google to supercharge the Android ecosystem and will enhance competition in mobile computing. Motorola Mobility will remain a licensee of Android and Android will remain open. Google will run Motorola Mobility as a separate business.

In a blog post, Google co-founder and CEO Larry Page writes that Google has acquired Motorola not only because of its strength in Android smartphones and devices, but also for being a “market leader in the home devices and video solutions business.”
